Job Description

The Mechanical Designer is a challenging and critical position. This position is highly energetic requiring significant multi-tasking and exceptional communication skills across many aspects of the business. Specific responsibilities below are functions that will be required in the Mechanical Designer role.
  • Oversight and participation in all aspects of the design and engineering of the product design including:
  • Housings
  • Gears
  • Gear-sets
  • Gear boxes (Planetary, Spur, Differential, Bevel, Helical, etc.)
  • Transition screws (Ball Screws, Acme Screws, Planetary roller screws, etc.)
  • Various types of bearing configurations
  • Structural loads
  • Fits/clearances
  • Knowledge of the electrical scope of work including:
  • Knowledge of motors (AC, Brush DC, and Brushless DC)
  • Commutation sensors
  • Position sensing
  • Velocity and load sensing devices
  • Open and closed loop control systems
  • High frequency response servo applications
  • Understanding of the basic principles of pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Work with customers to formulate their requirements
  • Understand the implications within an application
  • Ability to solve problems and the ability to recognize if a problem exists
  • Actively design with details each new product application through the full product life cycle including proposal, design, development, verification, and product support
SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Create Mechanical, Electrical, Control Systems Engineering (ME) conceptual trade studies and detailed proposal efforts
  • Create detailed layouts, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings for new applications using SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM
  • Create and execute product design details, which includes:
  • Detailing
  • Drawing
  • Review & Approve Drawings and Change Orders
  • Detailed Piece Part Drawings with Tolerance including temperature affects
  • Complete Bills of Material on drawings in ERP
  • Work cooperatively to provide Engineering technical support to manufacturing, suppliers, or customers
  • Ensure products are designed for producibility & manufacturability (DFMA)
  • Adhere to departmental procedures and standards to achieve highest quality of throughput
  • Participate on special assignments as assigned
  • Define, design, and support electromechanical and mechanical test equipment for each product application, including the creation of the automation code if needed
  • Ability to be hands on and willing to work in the shop environment to build prototypes & support production issues
  • Ability to participate in proposals and blank sheet design
  • Managing drawing completion status
  • Ability to work interactively with supply chain & suppliers to ensure optimal manufacturing processes are utilized
Requirements:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A.A.S. in Mechanical Design or Equivalent Degree Work Experience
  • Specific applicable experience of 3 – 5 years in an applicable work environment
  • Aerospace experience is a plus
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership skills through example, mentoring, and running multifaceted design efforts
  • Specific capability in the following software:
  • SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM
  • SolidWorks Simulation is a plus
  • Microsoft Products, including advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Exceptional analytical and mathematical background
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas both written and orally so others will understand
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes & methods
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) (ANSI Y14.5M)
  • U.S. Citizen, no dual citizenship allowed
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks Enterprise PDM is a plus
  • Working knowledge of Windchill (RELAX) is a plus
  • Knowledge of space environments is a plus
  • Knowledge of Land and Sea based systems is a plus
  • Knowledge of design for harsh environments is a plus
  • Experience with SolidWorks Simulation is a plus
  • Knowledge of Aerospace Military & Commercial Aerospace design requirements is a plus
  • Knowledge of aerospace designing standards is a plus
  • Knowledge of Additive Manufacturing design & manufacturing is a plus
  • Knowledge of certification/qualification testing per DO-160 and/or MIL-STD-810 is a plus
  • Knowledge of MRP/ERP programs is a plus
