Job Description

The Rotating Components Electrical Engineer is a challenging and critical position. This position is highly energetic requiring significant multi-tasking and exceptional communication skills across many aspects of the business. This position will be responsible for the functions and experiences listed below.
  • Be an internal advisor to our actuation product design engineering group and participate in the product development reviews with our engineering and program teams as well as our customers.
  • Manage each application including the full product life cycle (proposal, design, development, verification, and product support).
  • At times, lead a design team and have the responsibility to ensure that designs meet program cost, schedule, and technical performance requirements.
  • Create custom design workflow processes for rotating components and ensure the process is adhered to and is adequate to control risk and ensure success.
 SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Provide Electrical Engineering (EE) inputs for conceptual trade studies and proposal efforts.
  • Create detailed layouts in 2D and/or 3D for new applications.
  • Create detailed calculations on all aspects of the product (electromagnetics, magnetic analysis, math modelling, motor and system performance, frequency response, sensor analysis, dynamic stiffness, backlash, life, temperature, and thermal capacity studies) using Excel, MATLAB Simulink, Speed, and other analytical programs and custom tools.
  • Create Reliability Studies, Fault Trees, FMECA’s, System Safety and Hazard Assessment, etc.
  • While acting in a project lead capacity, define the scope of work and oversee the effort of Designers and Drafters who have been assigned to the project to support you. This includes but is not limited to Drafting, Materials Engineering, Stress Analysis, Dynamic Analysis, etc., (control system design, circuit design, PWB layout, software, EMI design, etc.).
  • Capability to define requirements and manage offsite controls providers for both card and box level controllers including software and hardware following the DO-178 and DO-254 processes up to and including level A.
  • Review/approve detailed piece part drawings.
  • Provide EE technical support to manufacturing, suppliers, or customers.
  • Define, design, and support electrical test equipment for each product application.
  • The candidate must also be hands on and willing to work in the shop environment to build prototypes and support production issues.
  • Have a collaborative team-based approach.
  • Adhere to departmental procedures and standards to achieve the highest quality and efficiency.
  • Participate on special assignments, and other duties as assigned by manager.
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
  • Expert knowledge in the following types of projects:
    1. High power density Motors and Generators
      • Brush and Brushless DC Motors and Systems framed and frameless.
      • AC Induction Motors
      • Stepper Motors
      • Torque Motors (Pancake form factor) Generator/Alternators
    2. Ancillary Devices
      • E/M Failsafe Friction and Tooth Brakes
      • Hysteresis Brakes
      • Detent Brakes
      • Eddy Current Dampers
      • Hysteresis and E/M Clutches
      • Position Sensors (HED, Resolvers, Encoders, Field Directors, etc.)
      • Velocity Sensing Devices (BLDC Tach’s, etc.)
      • Load Sensing Devices (Force and Torque)
  • Fundamental knowledge of control system design such as:
    1. Open and closed loop systems
    2. High frequency response servo applications
    3. Relays and switches
    4. Analog and digital control systems (including redundant systems, fault monitoring, diagnostics)
    5. DO178 and DO254 proficient.
  • 15+ years of related experience.
  • 10+ years aerospace experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills through example, mentoring and running multifaceted design teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and mathematical background.
  • Knowledge of motor theory, thermal analysis, magnetics and electromagnetics, and the effects of vibration and temperature.
  • Knowledge of certification testing per DO-160 or MIL-STD-810.
  • Knowledge of Aerospace, Military and Commercial FAA design requirements.
  • Knowledge of Aerospace material selection methods.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and methods for electrical components.
  • Knowledge of aerospace design and drafting standards.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) (ANSI Y14.5M).
  • Specific capability in the following software:
    1. SolidWorks
    2. MATLAB Simulink
    3. Speed
    4. Ansys
    5. SolidWorks Simulation
    6. LabVIEW
    7. Relex (Windchill)
    8. Microsoft Products, including advanced knowledge of Excel & PowerPoint
  • U.S. Citizen, no dual citizenship allowed.
  • The ability to obtain a government security clearance, if required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of aerospace software development.
  • Knowledge of electronic circuit design and PWB layout.
  • Knowledge of Aerospace Configuration Management.
  • Knowledge of the principles of DFMA is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of design principles that utilize additive manufacturing is a plus.
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks Enterprise PDM is a plus.
  • Knowledge of harsh environments such as Space environments is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Land and Sea based systems is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
